Established in 1916 by Sir Asutosh Mukherjee, a renowned educationist and mathematician, Asutosh College was formerly known as South Suburban College. Affiliated to the University of Calcutta, Asutosh College is known for being West Bengal's first college to receive the accreditation of the National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC). The public college is approved by the University Grant Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Situated in Kolkata, West Bengal, the college has 28 departments. Asutosh College offers over 45 courses across 6 streams at UG and PG levels with more than 132 faculty members.

The college library is more than 95 years old and has a collection of 53,375 books. Aspiring students seeking admission at Asutosh College are required to fill and submit the admission form available on the college's official website before its last date i.e. July 25, 2021. The college grants admission to the majority of the UG programmes based on the applicant's score in the class 12th final exams. After the application window closes, the institution releases the merit list announcing the names of eligible applicants. Admission to a few UG programmes is also based on applicants' performance in the entrance exam and interview conducted by the college.
