Department of Law, Panjab University was established in 1889 and re-located at the university campus at Chandigarh in 1959. The department has been ranked 27 for Law by NIRF in 2021. The Department of Law offers LLB (three years), LLM (one year) and PhD (three to six years) programmes in the Law stream.
The department has signed three MOUs with ELSA (European Law Student Association), University of Stockholm and Fancy Barristers, P.C., New York. The Department imparts practical training and a compulsory internship annually to LLB students. The students of the department are sent to the Supreme Court of India as a part of the practical training programme every year. The department has an exhaustive library with more than 56,000 documents and 52 regularly subscribed Indian and foreign journals. It has a Placement-cum-Counseling Cell that offers career counseling and guidance to students regarding various avenues available for academics and placements. It offers different types of scholarships like scholarships for students with disabilities, post-matric scholarships, central sector scholarships and SC/ ST scholarships.
