Gaya College was founded by a committee of eminent personalities in the year 1981. The committee included Dr Jagdish Sharma, former MP, Sri Ramashray Singh, Minister, Lt Dr Shakeel Ahmad Vice-Chancellor BRBU University, Muzaffarpur & former principal, Mirza Galib College, Sri Gopal Prasad Singh, former chairman (District Board), and Lt Prof RD Singh, and Lt Capt Shah Jahan, Lt Sri Jai Kumar Palit. At that time, it was called Magadh Engineering College.

The college remained closed for some time; from 1994 to 2008. In 2008, it reopened with the present name; Gaya College of Engineering. GCE, at present, is managed by the Science and Technology Ministry, Bihar. This 13-year-old college is affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Patna. All the courses offered here are accredited by AICTE and MHRD.

Departments

GCE has five academic departments; mechanical engineering, civil engineering, science and humanities, computer science and engineering, and electrical engineering and electronics. It offers four programs for undergraduates; B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering, B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering, civil engineering, and B.Tech Mechanical Engineering. Fees for the courses offered here are relatively low when compared to its competitors. While private colleges charge up to INR 500000, GCE charges just INR 77800.

Applicants for the four-year engineering courses at Gaya College have to pass the Bihar Combined Competitive Entrance Examination Test conducted by the BCCEB.
