Established in 1992, School of Maritime Studies is a part of VELS Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies (VISTAS). The School is located at VELS Thalambur campus and is approved by the AICTE. It is accredited by the NAAC with ‘A’ Grade. The Ministry of Shopping, Government of India has awarded A1 Grade School of Maritime Studies. 

The School is ISO 9001:2015 certified and offers BE, BSc, Pre-sea Training for Graduates (GME), Pre-sea Training for Diploma Holders (DME) and Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering. The advanced diploma course is offered by School of Maritime Studies in collaboration with the City of Glasgow College, UK.

The classes for Nautical Science and Marine Engineering courses are conducted at Agni College of Technology and faculty of this School comprises ex-mariners with years of experience on ships and ashore.

VISTAS offers scholarships to meritorious students. To identify the deserving candidates, the University conducts Vels Scholarship Admission Test (V-SAT). School of Maritime Studies, VISTAS scholarships are offered to students, who have completed Class 12. Based on the marks scored in V-SAT, top 500 students are awarded 100 per cent tuition fee waiver and other participants get up to 75 per cent tuition fee waiver, as per their score.
