Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) was established in the year 1989 as a part of the SPIC Science Foundation, funded by the SPIC group in Chennai. The institute was formerly known as SPIC Mathematical Institute. Chennai Mathematical Institute is recognised by the University Grants Commission as a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. The institute offers a total of eight courses, including BSc, MSc and PhD across three specialisations. It has a regular exchange programme with the Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) in France.

In 2015, Chennai Mathematical Institute set-up a separate society called Algolabs to promote interaction between CMI and the industries, notably in the area of Analytics, and Optimization. The society regularly conducts various training programmes and projects and provides opportunities for students to engage with the industry. Chennai Mathematical Institute provides a library, well-equipped computer labs, AC classrooms, Wifi facility and hostel facilities to their students.

The college follows a proper mechanism to ensure reservation for SC, ST, PC and OBC candidates according to the policy of Government of India. For offline mode, candidates have to submit the application form along with the fee to get the admit card for CMI entrance exam.

The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) scholarships depend upon the student’s satisfactory academic performance which will be reviewed every semester. The institute offers a significant number of scholarships which include full exemption of the tuition fees along with a limited number of fellowships.

The college also provides course-wise monthly allowance to the students. The allowance given for BSc programme is Rs 5,000 and MSc programme is Rs 6,000.
