National Law University, Odisha, also known as NLUO, is one of the newly established University among 23 NLUs. The University was established in 2009 in Cuttack, Odisha. It is a state-level university that is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It is accredited with an “A” Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In 2020, the University was ranked 6 and 14 for Law by India Today and the NIRF, respectively. Apart from this, it was also ranked 14 for Law by Outlook in 2019. In the same year, NLUO was also ranked 14 among all NLUs by the CLAT cut off.

The University offers UG, PG and doctorate programmes in the field of Law. The courses offered by the University are BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), LLM, PhD and MPhil. All the courses offered by the University are recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI). Every year, NLUO admits approximately 250 students under all UG, PG and PhD programmes. PhD is offered in full-time as well as in part-time mode under the Directorate of Distance Education. It also offers a BVoc programme under the Community College. NLUO has more than 50 permanent faculty members.
The University campus is spread across an area of 50 acre with accommodation of approximately 700 students and faculty members. NLOU’s library houses a collection of more than 13,000 books, law reports, journals, videos, etc. The campus comprises more than 15 research centres for the students to conduct research-related activities. Some of the research centres are the Centre for Child Rights (CRR), Centre for Banking & Insurance Laws (CBIL), Centre for Access to Justice, Centre for Women & Law, Centre for Natural Resources Management, Centre for Maritime Law, among others.
The University has also started a Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN), a new programme, approved by the Government of India. The programme is aimed at tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs, internationally to encourage their engagement with the institutes of higher education. At present, the University offers six basic courses, namely BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), LLM, PhD, MPhil and BVoc. BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons) are five-year integrated programmes offered with an intake of 120 and 60 students, respectively. The University also offers a one-year LLM programme with a seat intake of 50 students. PhD programme is offered in full-time and part-time mode. The minimum duration of full-time PhD programme is three years, whereas MPhil has a minimum duration of two years.
