Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University is recognised by the UGC and accredited by NAAC with an ‘A’ Grade. Established in 1973, the University has been upgraded to the position of a Central University under the Central Universities Act, 2009. Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University has three campuses, namely Birla campus, Srinagar (extension at Chauras campus), B. Gopal Reddy campus, Pauri and Swami Ram Teerth (SRT) campus, Tehri. Admission to HNBGU is both merit and entrance-based on qualifying for national-level examinations such as JEE Main, JNU CEEB, etc. The odd semester begins in August while the even semester commences from January. The University has 121 colleges affiliated to it spread over seven districts in Garhwal.

The SWAYAM Cell of HNB Garhwal University conducts free Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) for the students. HNBGU has signed an MoU with the University of Haifa, Israel for academic collaboration while the research projects at the University are funded by government bodies like the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Council of Social Science Research, among others. The NITI Aayog has started a new programme named the Indian Himalayan Central University Consortium (IHCUC) at the University to assess the economic impact of women employees in the hilly regions of Himalayan states.
