HNBGU is a state university and was established in 1973. The University has three campus- Srinagar Campus, Pauri Campus and Tehri Campus.  HNGBU is UGC approved and is accredited with A grade by NAAC

HNBGU offers UG, PG, and doctoral programmes in various disciplines. HNBGU, Pauri offers 12 UG and PG programmes. The campus also offers a vocational course in Journalism, and PG Diploma in Tourism, Yoga, and LLM. Currently, HNBGU, Pauri also offers doctoral programmes in all the disciplines.

HNBGU admissions process can be completed online. Admissions to some programmes at HNBGU is based on the entrance exam conducted by the university and admission to some programmes is based on the counselling conducted by the university and the rank in the merit list.

• Admission to BSc and BA programmes is based on the rank secured in the merit list
• For admissions to courses such as B.Ed, BPED, and BPharma, candidates must appear for the entrance test conducted by the University
• Admission to BTech programme is based on the counselling session conducted by the university. However, admission to BTech lateral entry is based on the marks obtained in the entrance test conducted by the university
• Admission to maximum PG programmes is based on the marks obtained in the entrance test conducted by the university

HNBGU Scholarships are offered to students based on the following:

• SC/ST Scholarships: this scholarship is offered to the bonafide students belonging to SC/ST/OBC category, provided that the annual income of the applicant's family does not exceed Rs. 2,50,000 in case of SC/ST students and Rs.1,00,000 in case of OBC category. Students falling in this category must have a bank account in any nationalized bank
• Merit-Based: this scholarship is offered to students securing ranks in the entrance examinations
• Financial Aid: this is offered to BPL students out of the Poor Boys Fund of the University proportionate to the number of applicants and the total funds available during an Academic Session
