Set up as a result of an agreement between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation, Sikkim Manipal University or SMU is a first-ever Public-Private Partnership (PPP) university located in Gangtok, Sikkim. Established in 1995, Sikkim Manipal University is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), accredited by the NAAC and approved by the Government of India. In 2021, Sikkim Manipal University was ranked 19 for Private Engineering by India Today. Further, through its six constituent institutes, SMU offers a total of 159 UG, PG, diploma and PhD courses in fields like Medicine, Technology, Management, Nursing, Commerce and various others. Along with full-time courses, the university offers distance learning through SMUDE.

Sikkim Manipal University through its Technical campus or SMIT offers merit cum means scholarships to its BTech students in the form of fee concessions. SMU scholarships offered to BTech students is tabulated below:  

• 20% concession on course fee is granted to candidates of Nepal and Bhutan 
• 10% concession on course fee is granted to immediate siblings of SMIT students
